About A Thousand Li of Rivers and Mountains (QianLiJiangShanTu)
A Thousand Li of Rivers and Mountains, is a famous Chinese landscape painting attributed to the Song dynasty artist Wang Ximeng. It was completed when Wang was only 18 years old, around 1113 CE. The painting is renowned for its vast depiction of nature, especially the rivers, mountains, and distant horizons, which span across a scroll that’s over 11 feet long.
The work is one of the best-known examples of traditional Chinese landscape painting, emphasizing the beauty and grandeur of nature, while showcasing the skills of Chinese brushwork, the use of ink, and vivid color. It’s often seen as an embodiment of Daoist ideas of harmony with nature, where human presence is minimal or nonexistent, allowing nature’s vastness and power to dominate.
